Putting up decorations this Christmas? Weed as you go!

Writer: Sarah WalkerSarah Walker

Most of us have too many Christmas decorations. Every year, we buy a few new bits to add to the mountain of ornaments, figurines, swags and nick-nacks we’ve already got, and the number of boxes in the loft just keeps growing...

But with everything else going on at this time of year, weeding and organising your decs might not be a priority, especially because you only have to deal with all the festive ‘stuff’ once a year, and it’s out of sight for the other 11 months.

Yes, yes, I know, but think how much better you’ll feel, knowing you’re not hanging onto things you don’t need. You can clear some storage space and next year you’ll only have to hump around boxes of decorations you’re actually going to use.

It really won’t take long – promise!

Once you’ve put your decorations up, look at the things that are left over and ask yourself:

  1. When was the last time I had this out?

  2. Am I ever likely to use it again?

Chances are, if you’ve left something in the box this year, it’ll be left there next year too.

So, throw away anything that’s tatty/outdated/broken, then for decorations that are still in good condition, just surplus to your requirements:

  • Do you or your friends have children who have recently moved out of home and might appreciate free Christmas cheer?!

  • Donate them to your local school, church hall, care home or homeless shelter.

  • Ask if the local shop or pub would like them.

If you sort as you go while you’re decorating this year, weeding shouldn’t really add much time to the process. Have a couple of empty boxes ready for donations and some bin bags for chucking…

…plus, you’re allowed just ONE small box for items you’re not sure about. Small! Then, next year you can give that box a good, hard stare and see if you’re ready to part with it.
