Interiors and fashion often go hand in hand when it comes to colours, fabrics and style - but that doesn't mean you need to change your décor as often as your wardrobe!

If you want a heads-up on home design trends for the upcoming year, check out the S/S and A/W catwalks. But, as with fashion, when the interiors experts reveal their trend predictions, you don't have to follow them to the 't' - in fact, it would be a bit odd (not to mention expensive) if you did!

So, when it's time to update your home, my advice is to go timeless and enduring with your bigger fixtures and furnishings, then you can tweak paint, accessories and the less expensive finishes to reflect current trends as and when you fancy.

Just because it's 'in' doesn't mean it has to be in your home!

Whether you're revamping a whole room or just making some subtle changes to fixtures, furnishings and accessories, the most important thing to consider is whether the new elements will look as though they belong.

For instance, this year's trend may be for industrial-style light fittings, but that's a vibe that simply won't work in a lot of homes. And deep burgundy might be the colour of the year, but it can feel very oppressive on the walls of a small room.

On the other hand, some cushions, lamps and wall art in colours and finishes that reflect the current trend can look great - showing you've got your eye on what's in fashion, but it's not overpowering or out of place.
