Blitz your bathroom!

Updated: Jul 18

The bathroom is a very satisfying project to tackle, because it doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to get it looking SO much better. Just putting things away and giving it a good clean will make all the difference.

But if it’s been a while since you paid the bathroom much attention, you might need a more serious blitz!

I like my bathrooms light, airy and fresh, with little touches of luxury - universally appealing.

What really turns me off is when there’s too much on display. Leave out just the essentials you use every day; the rest should be in a drawer or cupboard.

A bathroom crammed with bottles, plastic containers, brushes, exfoliators, soaps, razors – and so on – looks unattractive and is undoubtedly impossible to keep as clean as it should be.

So, if you’re looking for a project today, here are the five steps to blitzing your bathroom:

1. WEED

Have a good clear out and chuck anything that’s been lurking at the back of shelves, drawers and cupboards, quietly drying up or going out of date.

And there will almost certainly be things you’ve hung on to but will never actually make use of - like soaps you’ve been gifted, when you only ever use liquid body/hand wash. Either donate them to someone who will use them, or chuck. They don’t need to be taking up valuable space in your bathroom, which often has limited storage.

And as you’re weeding, pop everything you’re keeping into a box because you need to clear the bathroom completely.

2. CLEAN

Once everything is out of the bathroom, give it a really good clean. I mean REALLY good. Get in all the corners, up to the top of the tiles, on top of cabinets and mirrors…

You might need to invest in limescale remover and mould remover – and it’s worth buying some anti-mould spray to help prevent any mildew in the future if it’s been an issue in the past.

3. CATEGORISE

Put like with like, and this will let you see how much you have of each thing. This is where you might be able to weed further – and, again, if something is decent but you’re probably not going to use it, pop it aside to donate to someone who will.

And put the things you genuinely use every day into a separate group – these are the things that can be left on display.

Just a little note…One thing we tend to do is save certain items for a special occasion. You know, a really nice face mask, an expensive candle or a top brand body cream - things we can’t ‘justify’ using every day – and then they sit at the back of the cupboard for months, even years on end. Well, I say use them! Treat yourself to a bit of luxury every day - and especially after you’ve just cleaned and reorganised the bathroom!

4. ORGANISE

Look at the space you have in your (now clean) bathroom cupboards and drawers, the size of categories of different items and think about where it makes most sense to put them.

Importantly, think about how you can divide up the spaces so you can clearly see/reach what you have, and things don’t get in a pickle again! B&M has a fantastic collection of tubs, trays, boxes and baskets – that’s where I tend to go for my containers.

Make sure you carefully measure the spaces and take the dimensions with you when you shop. Storage solutions are only useful when they fit!

I promise this is the last time I’ll say it: only leave out the things you use every day, and make sure they’re neatly displayed.

And if your toothpaste isn’t one of those that stands up nicely on its cap, invest in one of these holder/winders. They keep the toothpaste neat and ensure you get every bit out of the tube! I went for the less cheap white version because I don’t like the aesthetic of the coloured ones – however, if you live with other people, it is a handy way to distinguish between tube owners!

Neatly fold or roll spare towels and facecloths – think spa presentation – and always have some spare toilet rolls neatly stacked or in a basket, with the ends folded in so people don’t have to scratch around to get started!

Then there are three key things to add to the room:

1.      At least one green plant

2.      A reed diffuser and/or scented candle

3.      A nice hand wash for guests

And you’re done. Now pop on a face mask, light a candle and pour yourself a glass of something lovely – you deserve it 😉
