I only recently discovered 'Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis' on Amazon Prime and have to confess, I absolutely love it!
Â
This was a small room in Roselyn Sanchez’s home (covered in Season 1, episodes 7-9) that she and her husband use for recording their podcasts, working and also as an occasional spare bedroom.
Â
In its original incarnation, it was such a dull and messy space that looked more like a student junk room than anything else! Dated furniture, bland carpet and blinds, and absolutely no style whatsoever. Although light paint generally opens up spaces, the stark walls only emphasised the chaotic contents:
(apologies for the low-grade images taken off my television!)
Even though it’s a small room, Jeff was keen to go for a bold wallpaper, which Roselyn chose, and he then created a panelled effect, which was actually very clever. Breaking up the top half of the room means the wallpaper doesn’t feel like it’s closing in on the space, and keeping the bottom part white stops the room feeling oppressive – which it would have done, if that wallpaper had met the dark carpet.
Overall, I it's certainly a very bold design, which wouldn't be to everyone's taste, but it was right for the client - and I kind of love it. And he managed to get the perfect husband/wife mix, making the room look pretty and homely, without being ‘girly’.
The only thing I think he got wrong was the picture above the sofa, which is bland and looks a bit cheap, in my opinion! I understand that he wanted to put something there that didn't compete with the wallpaper but, personally, I wouldn't have bothered - there's enough interest in the wallpaper and sufficient accessories on and around the sofa already.
If anything, I'd have hung a large, round mirror there and then on the opposite wall, where he's actually put a mirror, I'd have left that blank and popped a large plant on the sideboard.
What I really like about Jeff Lewis’s approach is that he is very collaborative. He always genuinely listens to his clients and takes on board their preferences and personal style – then elevates it with his own design knowledge and experience. The result is that they get something they love but would never have thought of themselves, and that’s the ideal outcome.

Final little note: if you are choosing velvet for seating, just make sure it’s specific upholstery fabric, which is hard-wearing and fairly stain resistant.
And if you haven't indulged in the renovation & refurbishment-fest that is Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis, I highly recommend you give it a go.
